Alicia's Project Recommendations for Beginners
In general, patterns labeled "easy", "quick", "2-hour", or something similar are best for beginners. Patterns with fewer pieces will go together easier.
New Look™ Patterns are very beginner-friendly! Try to avoid Vogue™ or Burda™ patterns for your first project.
Skirt with darts and a zipper
Pajama pants and shirts
Simple dresses
Un-lined jacket
Home decorator pillows
Tote bag

Books
Readers Digest© Guide to Sewing – an old edition is just as fantastic as a new one. Great step-by-step pictures! This book serves as a great reference for the novice and the professional.
Fabric Savvy© and More Fabric Savvy©– Sandra Betzina – an encyclopedia, of sorts. These books tell you the properties of each fabric, and precisely how to sew with them.
Sewing Machines
I love Janome!! The Studio has 7 Janome computerized machines for students to use.
Patterns
New Look Patterns© have modern styles, great sizing information on the envelope, and the instructions are beginner-friendly. Bonus – they are priced at just $3.99! I love them for beginners!
